The China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) held its 17th annual conference in Foshan, Guangdong province during September 20-22, 2019. More than 1000 experts in applied mathematics and industries as well as young students all over the country and abroad attended the conference. There were 8 invited plenary and 330 contributed talks, and 28 thematic symposiums with a wide coverage of topics including Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, Inverse Problem and Imaging, Mathematical Medicine, Computational Geophysics, Financial Mathematics and Engineering, Actuarial Insurance, Uncertainty Quantification, Seepage in Porous Media, High Performance Computing, Computer Algebra, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Optimization, Mathematical Life Sciences, and etc.
The highlights of the conference were 3 special forums: “Woman and Mathematics”, “Dialogue between Mathematics and Industries” and “Student Panel”.
The Women and Mathematics forum invited several distinguished mathematicians to share their learning and research experiences. They encouraged female mathematical researchers to be more confident, and called for a more equal and considerable environment for the growth of women in the mathematical research and to show “Women’s Power”.
On the occasion of the CSIAM student panel, 37 outstanding young students reported on their own scientific research achievements. It really provided a valuable platform for young students to improve their competence in their own research fields, and also to exchange with the experts from various fields.
The forum on Mathematics and Industries invited mathematicians and entrepreneurs to exchange views on mathematical problems in industrial applications. In the future, CSIAM will provide a broad platform benefiting both mathematicians and entrepreneurs, which aims to solve mathematical problems for the development of industries.
In addition, 6 mathematicians including Prof. Zhang Pingwen, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the president of CSIAM, Prof. Yuan Yaxiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the President of ICIAM, made a number of interesting public presentations for teenagers and citizens in Foshan, aiming to popularize scientific knowledge and inspire teenagers' interest in understanding mathematics.
