为祝贺马知恩教授90寿辰，《CSIAM Transactions on Life Sciences》组织了一期虚拟专题，由徐宗本、吴建宏、靳祯、肖燕妮、王稳地五位教授担任客座编辑，邀请到15篇研究性论文和综述。

马知恩教授1935年生于济南，1954年毕业于北京大学，1956年随校西迁，扎根西安交通大学。他曾任数学系主任、理学院院长、教育部高等学校工科数学教学指导委员会主任委员、中国数学会生物数学学会副理事长，并是该校教师教学发展中心的创始人与引领者。马教授长期致力于教育改革与人才培养，荣获八项国家级教学成果奖，出版教材十一套，并被授予“全国首届教学名师”称号。

在科研方面，马知恩教授主要从事微分动力系统与数学生物学研究，是我国生物数学研究的开拓者之一。他曾担任《Journal of Theoretical Biology》《Journal of Biological Systems》等国际期刊编委，主持国家级科研项目十一项。在种群动力学、生态毒理学及传染病数学建模等领域，他取得了一系列开创性且具有重要影响力的突破性成果，受到国内外同行的高度评价。著名数学生态学家Thomas Hallam及美国总统研究基金获得者Carlos Chavez-Castillo等学者指出：“马知恩教授是少数能够运用分析技术研究生态毒理学领域复杂与困难模型的科学家之一”，“马知恩教授开创了我国生态毒理学数学建模研究，赢得了国际认可。”马教授长期服务国家在传染病防控方面的重大需求，开展了HIV/AIDS、SARS等传染病的预测与预警研究，为数学生物学的应用树立了成功典范。

在人才培养方面，马知恩教授共培养硕士43名、博士11名，并出版了《种群生态学的数学建模与研究》《传染病动力学的数学建模与研究》等研究生教材与专著，为我国数学生物学的发展奠定了坚实基础。
